Imprisonment
is supposed to deter offenders from further offending, not provide an opportunity
for it Justice Palmer said when sentencing two Mt Eden prisoners for bribing a
Serco prison officer to smuggle tobacco into prison.
Prison guard Farani
Junior Faapoi has pleaded guilty to six charges of bribery and corruption. He is yet to be sentenced. Prisoners Travis James Sadler and Duane Roger
Keil also pleaded guilty. The High Court
was told that while Keil and Sadler were on remand at Mt Eden prison in May
2015 police surveillance of alleged drug dealing by members of the Head Hunters
gang learnt contraband was being smuggled into Mt Eden with Faapoi’s assistance. Coded text messages from a phone hidden
within the prison arranged for ‘laundry’ to be delivered. Faapoi was the go-between, being paid $1500
for deliveries.
Sadler was sentenced to
nine months imprisonment, added to a current eighteen year sentence for methamphetamine
manufacture and firearm possession. Keil
was sentenced to eleven months home detention.
He is undergoing supervised treatment for drug addiction.
